How do organic farming methods help the environment?
Organic farming has minimal impact on the environment.
Most commercial farms consist of acres of mono-crops (single crop), this is then prone to infestation by pests, resulting in continual use of pesticides as well as herbicides to reduce weeds (weeds out-compete the crop for resources). Herbicides and pesticides enter the food chain (some bio-accumulate) through the crops or the pests being ingested by their predators. These chemicals also enter the soil and waterways. If fertilisers enter the waterways algal blooms may occur and in worst case scenarios eutrophication occurs (zero dissolved oxygen – unable to sustain life).
Organic farms are holistic in the sense that the farms are generally not mono-crops but rather the principals of companion planting are followed – certain plants repel different pests – this results in minimal exposed soil, hence fewer weeds and little to no soil erosion. The food chain is no longer at risk and pest populations are controlled by natural predators.
Hope this helps – you can do further research by investigating DDT or read the book 'Silent Spring' – also do a google search on companion planting.
